Thirsty Thursday: Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin
Ballast Point makes damn delicious beer. Based in San Diego, their brewing style so matches their location in my opinion. I envision these really laid back dudes who appreciate the art of savoring a good thing as much as the work that goes into creating it. They put a lot of love and effort into their beers and it shows. Additionally, they created a fishing theme – fishing being something they really enjoy – for their brand to remind themselves to always do what you love. People like this are awesome.
Sculpin is their IPA that totally reeled me in, no fishing pun intended. I first tried it a few years ago and I now seek it out as much as possible. They’ve got limited distribution here in NYC so you can be sure if I ever see it on tap, I’m MIA for a few hours. #sorrynotsorry. As I was walking home the other night, I passed by City Swiggers, my local craft beer shop, and they were holding a Ballast Point tasting. My feet took me inside before my brain even realized what was going on.
I spent about two hours there talking with the rep and tasting through nearly their whole line of beers. I’d heard about Grapefruit Sculpin many times but never had a chance to try it so I was pretty dang thrilled. I LOVE this beer. It’s not for the faint of heart, though. It’s powerful, bitter and dank in a great way. All while being really bright. It would be very tough to improve upon Sculpin but my love of fresh, tart grapefruit will steer me toward Grapefruit Sculpin every time. Make your weekend even happier and look up where you can find this in your city. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you can.
